More on Green Certification
Two certification programs are spreading rapidly from state to state. Both aim to educate parents and providers on
environmental dangers to children and help eliminate those dangers. Their websites provide
lists of endorsed child
-care providers for parents choosing a facility.
Indiana Five Star environmental recognition program
Started by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, this program has a three-tiered system of ranking childcare providers based on how green they are. As an incentive for being in the program, facilities are offered free services including education materials, training opportunities, lead-risk assessment and grants that help reduce the cost of installing equipment made of recycled materials. See a list of participating facilities and more information on the program here.
Oregon Environmental Council Eco-Healthy Childcare Program
Started in 2005 and originally only available in Oregon, this program is working to expand nationally. Child-care providers from every state can become endorsed, but currently the council is conducting special outreach and offering incentives in seven pilot states: California, Colorado, Washington, Massachusetts, Maine, North Carolina, and Florida. There are currently facilities in 24 states, and two Canadian provinces listed on their website. Check here to see if there are any in your area.
