Water Birth

Hello Everyone!

I am due December 19th and considering trying the water birth experience? Any thoughts or comments anyone would like to share?

Thanks!

I totally support your choice to do it. I also think it sounds pretty cool. And if you are not a worry wart or care about grossness, go for it. I'll tell you why I didn't even consider it. First, I don't think, at least not here, that there are water birthing facilities with actual medical staff on hand to help in an emergency. I had a perfectly healthy full term pregnancy and my child still had issues when he was born that I'm so glad we were in a hospital setting for. Also, I didn't want to be swimming around in all that birthing gunk. Ugh. And I grew up on a farm. So to me, all those people that say it is natural are full of crap. I mean, I never saw a cow run into the pond to deliver its calf. If natural is the way, I should have had my child standing up. I've seen lots of calves come tumbling out that way. :) I"m not saying it's wrong to do the water birthing! I'm just more or less responding to all those "natural" mothers that like to judge.

Re: Water Birth

Having just had a perfectly healthy baby in a hospital setting I say if your doctor/midwife can support it while monitoring your baby, then great.  If not, then who are you trying to make happy here?  The point is to deliver and come home with a healthy baby and Mom.  Anything else is just gravy.  We tend to forget that before giving birth in hospitals while fully monitored a lot of Moms and babies died in child birth, or were permanently injured.  Babies don't recover from lack of oxygen and Moms don't always recover from blood loss.  Find a hospital or good birthing center that will support you while watching out for your baby's welfare first and foremost.  The best child birth experience is where you both go home safe, healthy and alive.  As for the gross factor, I didn't grow up on a farm but I never did hear of another land mammal that willingly gave birth in the water.  In my case, I was too busy working to just push my baby out to worry about climbing into to the tub.

Re: Water Birth

I had a water birth at a birth center last year and will never have birth any other way!!  Once I got into the bath my water broke immediately and I was in there for 45 minutes and the baby was out.  I did not have any tearing and pushed the baby out in about 25 minutes and she was my first.  I am very passionate about water birth and believe they are very beneficial to the baby and mother.  She was not shocked by the air but was brought out very gently.  Good luck in your decision!!

Re: Water Birth

I looked into having a water birth but the hospital I was having my son in didn't have that option.  While looking into this, I found that water births were more comfortable (pain wise) for the mother.  I believe you also have to be willing to have the baby naturally without any kind of drugs because of the position your in.  I wanted to do it so bad and now that I didn't, I wish I did.  I say go for it, it will be a great experience for you either way.  Good luck.....

The pain was still there but I truly thought it was going to get a lot worse.  That is why they call a water birth an aquaderal...

Re: Water Birth

I had two children naturally.  I didn't have the option for a water birth, but I was able to sit in the jucuzzi tub during labor.  I highly recommend the soak!  For both deliveries I was stuck at a 3 or 4 for most of the day.  After getting in the tub, I progressed very quickly.  My first one came only an hour after getting in the tub.  With my second one I barely got settled in the tub and was dilated to 10!  Both of my deliveries were very easy.  I can't say it was or wasn't the water, but next time I'm getting in the tub as soon as possible!

As someone else said before, the most important thing is going home at the end with a healthy baby and mom.
