9 Month old now waking in Middle of Night

Hoping someone out there has a bit of advice. Our 9-month old son has been a great sleeper his whole life (yes, I know we're very lucky). But suddenly he seems to be waking in the middle of the night and standing up in his crib and crying. If we go into the room and lay him back down, he usually goes right back to sleep. However, we're now trying to let him soothe himself and go back to sleep, but that ususally just leads to him to cry and scream and really wake himself up. Any thoughts on the best approach to help him soothe himself so he lays back down (himself) and goes back to sleep on his own without us having to come to help him every time? Thanks!

I had the same problem recently, but it was related to teething; it was a long 2.5 weeks.  Babies get "stuck" at night sometimes when they are learning to stand up, etc... is he able to lay back down on his own during the day?  Just a thought.  Good luck!

Re: 9 Month old now waking in Middle of Night

We went through this with my son too.  He is now 10.5 months old.  The pediatrician said that this often occurs because of separation anxiety. He did the exact same thing where he would stand on the side of his crib and cry until it escalated and he would get really worked up.   I ended up soothing my son for a couple of weeks and he finally settled back down and began to sleep through the night again.  It is a phase that will pass soon.  Hang in there :o)

Re: 9 Month old now waking in Middle of Night

My now 13 month old started this about the same time. She'll wake for a few minutes and cry like her heart is breaking and when I go in there she's either standing up or she's already back asleep. She still does it from time to time now, it seems like it goes in spells a couple nights here a couple nights a few weeks later. I asked her dr. and he said some babies do it and they can't find exactly why but think it's related to teething and the developement of imaginations or possible dreaming. My baby has had 12 teeth since she was 9 mo's and not cut anymore since so I don't know about the teething theory. I am glad that after a few minutes she seems to settle herself back to sleep. I still have a mobile in the crib with music and light that she will sometimes turn on when she wakes like that and what I call fish tv (this music playing/lighted aquirium thing). Good luck and if you find anything else let us know.

My daughter is now 14 months also waking up in the middle of the night

My daughter starting waking up in the middle of the night. I read some material that says when baby's start trying to walk it starts to cause there legs to be sore and be unsettled at night when they sleep. So at night I lay down with her and rub her legs and hips. This seems to help. She also is going through the transition to get off the bottle. So she needed to something to self soothe so when she wakes up I give her a dolly and she holds on to it and go's back to sleep and doesn't wake up anymore through the night. I think it just the fact that something is close and she is holding something and not by herself. I noticed that she would start to grab the blankets pull them up to her cheek and try to cuddle with it so that when i started introducing the dolly. It did take me a few different dolls and stuffed animals to find the right one that she wanted. So maybe if you see that when she/ he starts to fall back to sleep maybe you might want to introduce a stuffed animal or doll. Hopefully this could be a help.
