Things that will come in handy...

Hello Mommies-to-be:I am a first time mother, and I have some great tips for things that will definitely come in handy.

#1 – Portable Bassinet: this is useful because it allows you to lye the baby down and move the baby from one room to another, it's definitely for mommies who need to get things done.

#2 – Diaper Genie: this is good because it provides convenient storage for diapers, and it also kills odor.

#3 – Wipe Warmer: the wipe warmer is great because most babies do not like cold items touching their bottoms so the wipe warmer not only keeps wipes warm but it also helps your baby to remain comfortable during changing time.

#4 Travel System (includes car seat and stroller): although very heavy, the travel system really comes in handy, what I like the most is how the car seat latches directly to the stroller, and it is convenient because you don’t have to remove the baby from the carseat.

#5 Crib Mobile: I hear that it is good to introduce you baby to colors at a young age, my daughter absolutely loves her mobile, and she also enjoys the music which really soothes her a night or when she is upset.

#6 – Bibs (with plastic backings): the cloth bibs are great when the baby is new because they are not very active, and they did not vomit much, but after about 3 months they will definitely need bibs with backings in order to keep there clothing from getting wet, and also because they tend to be more active therefore, the baby is more likely to vomit.

# 7 Dreft Laundry Detergent: Dreft is the best laundry detergent for washing a baby’s clothing, From my experience, it does not harm the baby's skin. The best result is that it leaves the baby's clothing smelling very good.

#8 Johnson’s Baby Care Products: Johnson’s is one of the best brands, it’s good on the baby's skin, and it keeps baby’s skin looking healthy, feeling soft, and smelling great.

# 9 Containers, Baskets, etc: baby's have many small items, and the best way to keep them together is to buy containers or baskets, it helps you stay organized, and it also makes it easier for you to find your baby’s belongings.

Finally, # 10 Supportive Love Ones (this is very important): love ones will definitely come in handy, you will need the extra help.  Good Luck :)

Re: Things that will come in handy...

I think some things are really useful for some and a complete waste to others, it all depends on the mother! We never used a bassinet but propped our baby up on a boppy and had a swing and a portable 'seat/bouncer' combo that was useful. We kept one in each room and moved the boppy around with us, plus it's only about $30 and since it's been a product a lot of people have used in the past about 5 years, they're probably pretty easy to find used as well.

We didnt plan on a travel system but one was purchased for us and it was nice to have.

You can warm up wipes with your hands, but by the time baby's butt hits the room temp air, the room temp wipe is not going to make much difference.

We never had a diaper genie either. When we did use dd's we used a small trash can and left it 'open' to diffuse the smells through the air instead of closing them in and changed the bag frequently. Now that we use cloth full time, we also keep the lid open and a fan going in baby's room to diffuse the smell and rarely have issues.

We liked having a play pen for travel, and would work just as well as the portable bassinet, but would grow with baby over time.

My most important piece of advice is to go 'low' on buying things and registry and pick up items you may need or want with gift cards later on.

Re: Things that will come in handy...

As a mom of 4 (4m-10.5y), I have been around a lot of baby stuff.

A portable bassinet is great if you have the money and space, especially if you plan on passing it down to future kids.  If not, skip it.  A bouncy seat works just as well and is smaller.  A baby sling is great too, but I never had one (always wanted one).  A pack-n-play with a bassinet insert is good for using at home and on the road plus it grows with the child.

I bought a Diaper Champ since Diaper Genie's are so expensive.  The Diaper Champ uses regular garbage bags and if you have a really stinky diaper, you can just put it into a plastic grocery bag & throw it in there.

Unless you live in a very cold climate and/or have a baby in the very coldest months, a wipe warmer isn't necessary.  A few seconds in the hand and the wipe is warm.  Plus, I would think a little coolness on the bottom would feel good after having on a hot, wet diaper.

A travel system is great, but you can buy the car seat and stroller separately if needed.  Mobiles--well, it depends on the baby.  Mine have used theirs very little, but I guess it's because I didn't leave them in the crib for very long.  You can't have enough bibs (all kids for all stages)!  Baby Dreft or Baby All are great.  Baby All is less perfumed for those who have allergies.

You can do without the lotions, oils, and powders unless your baby has a specific skin condition that requires it.  Any name brand is fine, in fact, I really like Gerber's Grins & Giggles.  Johnson's is great too.   Powder can be dangerous if the baby inhales it.  Be very careful when using it.  Desitin and A&D ointment are great.  Use trial and error to see which works better for the specific baby and each rash.

I prefer his rocking chair. And its great because it'll last through the toddler years. I've also found that All free and clear detergent is actually healthier for the babies than dreft...(I've used both). I also found that the diaper genie, while it gets rid of the smell, is actually very expensive, but theres a great alternative that does just as well, but uses regular kitchen bags instead of refills. Its really great of you to put together this list to help other moms!! Thanks!!

Re: Things that will come in handy...

I agree with some of the stuff on there but not all. Portable bassinets are good as well as playpens (or as they're now called pack and plays) if you don't have one a monitor system works as well then you can hear the baby in anyroom you're in and most now have a wireless feature and works off batteries so it's ultra portable. Some higher end ones have a video feature on it so you can watch baby too. The diaper genie and wipe warmer i've heard good and bad. some mom's can't live without them and others which they would have saved the money. We didn't purchase either. we take the diapers out daily so there is no mess or smell and they go in our bathroom trashcan up on the back of the toilet so our dogs don't get to it. With wipe warms i heard many moms complain that it dries them out. Honestly if you have the tub sitting in the room, they should be close to room temp and shouldn't be that cold anyway unless you have to air too cold or no heat coming in the room. To each their own though, you have to figure out what you like.

The one thing that I think is totally useless, pointless, and a GIANT waste of money is Dreft or any "baby detergent." I get on my  soapbox (no pun intended LOL) any time i can when i hear people recommend Dreft, i think it should be left for use only in extreme cases. In order for dreft or any other baby detergent to be effective you have to wash anything that the baby will come in contact with in it. What is the point of washing all the baby's clothes/blankets in Dreft if you're still using Gain or Tide or whatever on your clothes and the baby has an allergy to that? So that means your clothes, towls, dishrags; everything has to be washed with that little bottle of detergent that is awfully expensive to be washing everything in. And then because your baby is going to come into contact with relatives, who more than likely use a different detergent, THEY have to wash their clothes with Dreft to prevent irratants. See how silly that is? You're best bet: Use your regular detergent and put baby in a onesie that was washed in it. IF baby has a reaction to the soap then switch to a fragrance/dye free version of your regular detergent, just about every brand has one now. My bestfriend's nephew kept getting breakouts and her and her sister couldn't figure out why when her sister was using dreft. I asked if they were washing everyone's clothes in Dreft because if not he was probably getting irratated by the fragrances by the others' detergent. I think she's since switched brands of soap and quit using dreft because it was utterly pointless to use that expensive stuff to wash an entire households clothing in it.

I would add to the list as others have a boppy pillow. its great for nursing moms but even for formula moms as well, it helps get babies up to the proper height when feeding and helps relieve the tired arms from holding all baby's weight up. Rocking chairs are helpful as well as bebe pod/bumbo chairs. I found ours cheap on ebay, used but my baby doesn't know that and it's in great condition. Rummage sales can be godsends on getting baby gear, we got our doorway bouncer for $3 and our walker for $1.  He doesn't care that they are used and they work just fine. Rummage sales are an awesome place for baby clothes as well, lots of gently used clothes at great prices.

Re: Things that will come in handy...

The two things I found I used the most were/are the portable pack n play with bassinet and a swing (godsend!). Thankfully my baby did not have sensitive skin that required specific lotions, soaps or laundry detergent, I used whatever was cheaper or in the case of detergent what I used for our clothes.

I thought about getting a diaper genie but found it and the refills to be to expensive. I generally put the dirty diapers out in a regular trash can unless it was a super stinky one and then I would put it in a ziplock type bag seal it up and throw it away. I also carry ziplocks in the diaper bag for stinky diapers when traveling so I'm not putting it directly in the trash can. I am a bit of a diaper snob, I like huggies, I've tried store brands from time to time but always go back to the huggies.

I had a wipes warmer and never used it. It ended up being more of a hassle than a benefit and a cold wipe never seemed to bother her.

I was on a limited budget and limited space so I made do with what I had or could get at a reasonable price. I was amazed at how much help and baby items I received from friends, family and even neighbors and I have been sure to pass my gently used items on to other friends/family.

Re: Things that will come in handy...

As a mom of 2 children, really close in age I might add ( 21 months and 12 weeks) I find the most useful baby item I have is the ultimate baby wrap! My son had colic up until this week and it was the only thing that kept him close enough to me that he was happy. Another life/time saver is my microwave sterilizer. Our dishwasher bit the dust 2 weeks before Connor was born and I am just now getting back to work. We have a co-sleeper instead of a bassinet.  It is so handy in the middle of the night don't have to get out of bed to nurse him. Its great!

Re: Things that will come in handy...

As a mom of seven, pacifiers were great. Swaddling blankets, a nursing pillow, a baby sling, a pack and play, a good baby gate (if you have stairs), and a baby swing was all I really needed. None of my kids liked mobiles (although they liked the one on the swing). I reused plastic grocery bags for dirty diapers. The sink was a much easier bathtub (it had a better angle also) to wash a baby in. I make my own baby towels (they are adorable) so the baby has a better hood, and stays warmer and dryer. I also couldn't tell you how much a GOOD breast pump is if you are nursing. I used mine for work and now also at home. Now I will tell you that I bought everything you can imagine for my babies (even pull behind your bike carts, baby backpacks, ect.) and this is all I needed or used. Good luck and remember at your tiredest moment how you have been blessed and in your baby's eyes the list is just YOU!
