What do We do when Our New Grandbaby is Miles Away?

My Daughter had a 8lb 1oz Baby Girl on April 29,2009. I've seen her only on the Computer(Skype) since she was born and though I love Wilmington,NC (we have been here 2 yrs) I still wish We lived near My Daughter and Son in law and now 2 Granddaughters like we used to. My daughter's Mom n Law and I helped my daughter when Our first granddaughter was born by switching weeks taking care of the baby while my daughter went back to work. I can't help her like that this time and I feel sorry I can't help out like I used to. Any ideas how to soothe Grandma woes since grandchildren are far away now? Would appreciate any suggestions. Thank Goodness for webcam's and Skype, I just might run away back to where my daughter lives if we didn't have that blessing (LOL). My Husband is very sympathetic but, he has a job here and I'm guessing we will retire here. Oh Well, thanks for reading this and sorry to be so wordy its a problem I have when emailing and writing letters...Take Care MeeMaw1465 :)

Hi MeeMaw1465, and welcome to the Our365 community! Don't worry, you're not being too wordy. ;)

My husband's parents live in England, so I know what it's like from a mom's point of view to have at least one set of grandparents not be nearby to see the babies growing up. :( We try to keep them feeling connected by sending lots of pictures via email (and prints by regular mail) and also sending a DVD of home videos once a month or so. They don't have a high-speed Internet connection so no webcams for us, unfortunately.

As for you wanting to help, I'm trying to think of ways you could "pitch in" from a distance.  Maybe send her any coupons you might see to help the new family save some money? Compile a recipe book with shopping lists to make preparing meals easier (and incorporate some family traditions that way too)? I wonder if other moms will have some ideas too...

Congrats, in any case! :)

Re: What do We do when Our New Grandbaby is Miles Away?

Hi, Ladies! Well I'm afraid all I can do is empathize with you. My daughter lives in Ohio & she just had twin boys, Andrew & Alan on September 11, 2009.Thank goodness I was able to go to Ohio for the last month of her pregnancy & through the delivery but I live in Louisiana & have absolutely no idea when I will be able to go for a visit again. I left to return home when the boys were only 1 wk old. It is so difficult sometimes when I yearn to be there to not miss out on all their firsts, to help my daughter (a first-time mom....twice-fold!) & just to do as mom's do....fix everything or make it all better when she's pulling out her hair. I hope to be able to at least enjoy them from a far via internet & webcam soon.

Thank God to such major advances in technology!! I would never survive such circumstances & kept my sanity 10 or 20 years ago. Good Luck to all of you.

God Bless,
